Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning

Continuing education and lifelong learning at the School of Public Health are diverse and range from short courses, institutes, professional certification review courses, workshops and conferences with credit and not-for-credit options delivered both on-campus and online. The Centers are actively involved in developing and offering courses and modules according to the professional needs and intellectual interests of practice partners, alumni, current students and professionals working in their respective fields.

Academic Degrees and Certificates

The School of Public Health supports a variety of academic certificates, degree and dual degree programs for the Master of Public Health (MPH), Master of Science (MS) and doctorate (PhD). Check out the School of Public Health home page for more information.

Basic Math Skills Refresher - A Tutorial

MS Excel for PubH 6414 and Excel Tutorial

MS Excel is required for students who take PubH 6414 via distance. You can order it from the University of Minnesota bookstore at a student rate. Be sure you have the Data Analysis plug-in.

An Excel tutorial can be found on http://www.usd.edu/trio/tut/excel. This is a helpful resource to refresh your Excel skills if you havenít used Excel in awhile. (This is just one of many Excel tutorials available on the internet.)

Take a Course Online

Students can take a variety of online courses and modules to complete degrees, academic certificates or continuing education. Find out more about continuing education and lifelong learning offered online or do a keyword search for registration information. Many of the online modules are for free or a small fee. Public Health Institute

A flexible and popular option for completing courses in an accelerated timeframe is attendance at the Summer Public Health Institute. During this three week period in late May-June, dozens of courses are available for academic or continuing education credit. The Institute is supported in part by funding from a variety of centers from CPHEO.

Roundtable Series

The School of Public Health offers a roundtable series each academic year focused on timely public health themes. Roundtables showcase academic research, application of research to public health practice, and dialogue with the practice community. Emergency Preparedness and Response Fundamentals for Environmental Health Professionals

Environmental Health and Nursing Series

The Environmental Health and Nursing series is designed to assist nurses interested in being members of the environmental health team by integrating knowledge and skills into professional practice.

Genomics: The Connection to Public Health Practice

This course is designed to assist practitioners in integrating knowledge and skills into professional practice and presents lectures from four national experts in the field of genomics: Tim Baker, Toby Citrin, Karen Edwards, and William Toscano, Jr., as well as a panel discussion.

Incident Management Systems

This module is intended to provide an opportunity for the application of previously learned Incident Management System concepts to public health-based scenarios.

Maternal Nutrition

The overall goal of this continuing education program is the improvement of maternal and infant health through the delivery of risk-appropriate high-quality nutrition services. This course is designed for dietitians, nutritionists, certified nurse midwives, registered nurses and nurse practitioners, physicians and public health professionals who serve preconceptual, pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women.

Principles and Applications of Surveillance

This module is intended to provide an overview of Principles and Applications of Surveillance concepts.

Public Health Emergency Training (PHET)

UM PHET is a series of awareness-level online modules covering various topics related to emergency preparedness.
