MCLPH Activities

Public Health Workforce Assessment and Evaluations & Competency Identification

In collaboration with the state departments of health in Minnesota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin, MCLPH assesses core public health competency gaps in the public health workforce to provide a basis for program development and evaluation. An online survey has been developed.

In collaboration with our sister Center, the University of Minnesota Center for Public Health Preparedness, MCLPH has developed a process that provides a consistent method for identifying the level of skill acquired in a training activity. Go to the University's Center for Public Health Preparedness to review this tool.

University of Minnesota School of Public Health Roundtable Series

Several times each year, Roundtable events are offered that highlight emerging and critical issues to the public health workforce. Videotapes of recent Roundtable offerings include sessions on Tobacco Reduction, AIDS, and Health Disparities.

Cultural Responsiveness

One area in which MCLPH is focusing is the development of activities to learn about culturally responsive public health practice. Several courses, co-taught by persons from under served/underrepresented communities and SPH faculty are available on this topic through the summer Public Health Institute. Tuition Waivers for participation in evaluation studies are available for selected courses.

Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning

MCLPH offers a wide range of professional Continuing Education. Please check the course search page or contact us at mclph@umn.edu if you are interested in more specific information.

Distance Education

MCLPH provides access to core public health curricula through the enhancement of academic courses for online delivery, creation of online continuing education modules, and through a flexible Institute format.

Kids in Public Health

Creating the future public health workforce is a critical aspect of the MCLPH mission. Through collaborative work with our state and academic partners, and innovative strategies such as the creation of Outbreak at Watersedge, an online game for students, MCLPH is looking toward the future. The Spanish version of this game, Epidemia en Watersedge, was released in 2006.
